Myiasis, also known as maggot disease, is caused by the blue-green humbug (Lucillia sericata). The fly is attracted to warm, moist places such as a rabbit's hindquarters, especially if sticky faeces remain attached to them (faeces). The fly then lays eggs on the skin or between the fur of the guinea pig or rabbit. The maggots hatch from the eggs within two days and eat their way through the skin and underlying tissues. The flies are more active during warmer periods.
